Poster Printing That Gets Noticed: Sizes, Stocks and Placement
From A3 noticeboards to A0 statement pieces — how to choose the right poster size, stock and design so your message actually gets read.

A poster has one job: to be seen and understood from a distance, often in the half-second before someone walks past. Get the size, stock and design right and a single sheet can do the work of a whole campaign. Get them wrong and even beautiful artwork disappears into the background.
Choosing the right size
Poster sizes step up roughly by doubling. A3 is the everyday noticeboard and shop-window size — close-range, informational. A2 is a noticeable step up for retail displays and events. A1 reads clearly from across a room and is a popular event and presentation size. A0 is the statement piece: maximum impact for exhibitions, launches and high-traffic locations. As a rule, choose the size by viewing distance — the further away your audience, the bigger you need to go.
- A3 — noticeboards, shop windows, close-up reading
- A2 — retail displays and mid-range visibility
- A1 — events, presentations, reads across a room
- A0 — exhibitions and statement displays
Stock and finish
Most posters are printed on a 170gsm satin or gloss stock, which balances vivid colour with enough body to hang flat without curling. Gloss maximises colour punch for image-led designs; satin reduces glare under bright lighting, which matters for posters near windows or spotlights. For posters that need to survive outdoors or heavy handling, ask about weatherproof or mounted options.
Design for distance
The biggest poster design mistake is treating it like a flyer. From across a room, nobody reads a paragraph. Lead with a short, bold headline that works in a glance, use high-contrast colours, and give the key message room to breathe. Save the detail — times, terms, small print — for the bottom, and include one clear call to action or a QR code for people who want more.
If your headline cannot be read and understood in a single glance from across the room, it is too busy.
Placement matters as much as print
A great poster in the wrong place is wasted. Put it at eye level, where your audience naturally pauses or queues, and where the lighting is good. A few well-placed posters in high-footfall spots beat a stack pinned wherever there is a free space. Think about sight lines before you think about quantity.
